Went out with a charter (Fish Finders - www.fishingseattle.com) on Sunday. Had my grandpa in town and wanted to take him salmon fishing, despite it being too early to keep any chinooks. Captain Carl Nyman did an outstanding job putting us on the fish and I do believe that we caught more salmon than most other boats out that day. We trolled chartreuse hoochies most of the time on downriggers, although we did catch a couple on flatline herring. We had brought in 2 nice kings by 6:30am. Of course, we couldn't keep those so just a quick photo and back in the water they went. After a little down time, we found the cohos. The bite wasn't super hot, but we had a steady 1 fish per 40 minutes going on all the way until 11am. Ended up keeping 6 decent size silvers before hauling in a truckload of flounder within 20 minutes. All in all, it was a great day and I would highly recommend this Carl as a guide if anyone is interested in going salmon fishing with an expert guide. He took excellent care of us and was reasonably priced.

Nice catch, I saw that charter boat out there that morning. We were in a Hewescraft with a green top on, only got 1 keeper coho into the boat that day on a fly.

Nice catch! Are those resident coho? I had heard there were some in the sound or are those coming back from the ocean already? I thought coho were a late summer / early fall deal? Thanks for any info!

Jd,
I fish area 5 a lot this time of year throughout October. There's always silvers trickeling in, later in the summer and fall is when they begin to get a lot bigger. That's seems to be the general trend

SaNFiShOn...Next time you are out trolling for salmon, just let your gear get anywhere near the bottom and I'm sure you can catch all the flounder you want. Seriously, though, if you want to catch flounders, just drop a small hook with some squid (or even a small rubber worm with scent) down to the bottom in the sandy areas. I'm not sure what depth they hold at now, but I assume it's much shallower than the 90-100 ft. they hold at in April when I catch them for Ling Cod bait. Limit is 10 per person, and it won't take long to catch your limit.

Jungle Jim...thanks for the tips. I caught a lot flounders before with nightcrawlers but most of them are small. Gonna try some squid and rubber worms next time. I thought the limit was 15 per person too. Thanks for letting me know.

never fished flounder much but we had a run of starry flounder hit the port angeles harbor about 6 years ago, they averaged 10# but got several 15#.They were a blast on light gear, one trip my partner got a 35# lingcod fishing in about 18 ft of water on a trout rod with 10# test line,we got it in the boat.

sunfighter: Starry Flounders are BAD ASS! I hooked one when I was a kid and it kicked my butt. They are more like a halibut than a flounder when it comes to fighting. It would be awesome to get into a batch of 10# to 15# starrys. That's something you'll probably remember for the rest of your life.
