Tried squidding for the first time on Friday night down at Shilshole Dock A Pier, and I was the only one who didn't catch a thing. The other fishermen were really friendly and helpful, and they advised me that my jigs were much too large. The guy next to me who was catching them left and right showed me the jig he was using and told me to go down to Linc's Fishing Tackle down in the International District. He said pink worked best. I went down to Linc's the next day and got myself a small assortment of jigs.
So I tried again on Sunday night, and the difference was amazing. About a half hour after sunset a school of squid came through, and the bite was on for maybe an hour. I caught seven squid in that time, and had probably another four or five misses. Most of the time they were near the surface, and you could see them homing in on your jig. They are a lot of fun to catch, especially the way they come up spraying and squirting ink clouds in the water. The weather was clear and quite pleasant. Not too chilly. It was about 2 hours past high tide when I started fishing.
I have to say the squidders were a friendly bunch. A lot of them seemed to be fishing as a family, and there were lots of kids there on Friday night. I can't wait to take my daughter out with me.
