So after winning the mystery fish last weekend decided to enter this Saturday's south sound derby. Now my wife witnessed my winning check so she wanted to go with me today for her 1st salmon trip; I knew it was going to be a tough day with the pressure drop but decided to launch at Pt. Defiance and try our luck there 1st and then move down to area 13 for a novice attempt to catch a fish in uncharted waters for me. We launched at 5am and moved around the Owens' beach area until we could see the water and the tried from the slag pile to the clay banks without a hit. Not many others were catching fish either so we motored over to the girl scouts camp which was pretty cool but no fish
About 11am decided to make our move down to Swantown in Olympia to launch and see if we couldn't get ourselves a fish for the derby. It was low tide when we arrived and a police boat was blocking one of the lanes so it took awhile to get in the water but once we did we motored up to little fish trap ( thanks to Easy limits Carl for the heads up) and moved around to try and learn how to fish this area After realizing that most people jig in this area and ride the rips, had my wife move us closer to shore and found a ledge between 60 and 80 feet so started trolling along the ledge and at 3pm had one of the rods pull off the clip and could see it was a fish. Now I had never had my wife on the boat before so did my best to help her get the other line in, extend the net, and the one thing I neglected to mention was not to swipe at the fish with the net. So of course, after bonking it in the head with the net, my spoon came unbuttoned and the lucky fish was left to hopefully mate and have baby salmon some day! haha Oh well, it was still a fun, full day on the water with her and we got back the marina around 5pm.
Biggest fished weighed was 23.6lb king with the next at 15.05lb so my fish yesterday would have taken second place..lol
Need to rest tomorrow but will be back out on Monday! see you on the water
