Tried again for sturgeon around low tide, near Priest Point. Anchored in about 10 feet of water and put our sand shrimp in the water. First half hour the current was really ripping and nothing was biting, so we moved location slightly to get in some slower water. Put our bait out again, and within just a few few minutes, fish on. After maybe a minute, the fish came to the surface and breached nearly totally out of the water. Sturgeon on...my first ever! I could hardly believe what I just saw. I was shaking with excitement. Spent the next 45 minutes or so playing the fish, so we could handle it once to the boat. Finally tired it to the point where we could handle it safely and gently in the water. Fork length was 56 inches (62 inches total)...2 inches too big to keep. Didn't weigh it, but we estimate it was 70-80 lb...it was a very FAT fish. Bummer we couldn't keep it, but maybe next time. It was still the thrill and privilege of a lifetime fighting one of these prehistoric monsters and watching it breach on the end of my line. Nothing the rest of the day, other than a nasty squall that moved through, but that catch alone was worth the trip. I have video and pictures which I will try to post later.
