A friend and I camped at Salt Creek and fished Freshwater Bay for halibut Thursday-Saturday. Great trip, but we got skunked! Thursday and Friday we only got about an hour and a half of fishing a day due to rough waters and moderate winds (for our small boat). However, Saturday was great water-wise! We fished 9am-6pm. We did not get so much as a nibble. We used both horse herring and large white glow in the dark white jigs with no success. Our depth was anywhere between 180-410 feet. We mainly targeted 250-350 feet drop-offs.
We talked to a WDFW fish counter on Thursday. He had checked 24 anglers. Four had caught a halibut, and one ling. There are some halibut out there, and it's my understanding they're being caught fairly shallow; 225-250 range. The odds of hooking into one seem to be about 1 in 6. Hopefully things heat up for the derby next week!
