Saturday 4:30am my 6 year old son is tapping my forhead "Daddy get up its time to go salmon fishin".I hauled myself out of bed more excited about my sons gung-ho attitude than the day ahead. 5:00am my good friend Ron and his son Cole show up on time.5:30 boat is launched and crab pots are being deployed in steady drizzle ,the boys are having a great time despite the rain.6:00am we arrive at mid-channel along with a couple hundred other boats.6:15am rods and downrigger are out time for the fish to bite.We started near the Marrowstone lighthouse shallow in only 50ft of water and baits at 25 and 38ft.6:30am Rons rod at 38ft gos off "fish on" and its a good fish.Ten mins later we have a 22lb hatchery king in the bottom of the boat being subdued by a 6year old and the the fish club.Spirits are high less than 30 mins in we have a nice fish in the box and the whole day left to fish.9:00am we have made 2 passes all the way to Point Wilson in the rain and fog.No more takedowns for us and only saw a handfull of nets out and fish boated.9:15am we are back off of Marrowstone in 30ft fishin the edge of the rip,my rod gos off in only minutes after being set.Rod out, some head shakes and gone, fish won that round.The boys are wet,cold and now getting bored but still in good spirits. 10:30am we are back at the top end and still shallow in less than 50 ft of water and Ron is back at 38ft on the rigger what he calls the "magic spot".We start runnin the rip on the inside and bam Rons rod gos off" 38ft strikes" again and its a good fish,Ron hands the rod to Cole.The fish makes a long strong run and then turns and heads for the boat. Cole cant keep up, then the fish turns and takes off on a longer run,stops shakes its head and gone.1:00 pm we are headed for the crab pots, no more fish and we saw verry few nets out.Pretty slow opener, but the boys had a ball and we got 9 keeper crab.Take a kid fishin it will change both of your lives.Tight lines,Chad
