Great opening day! Took my pops, my buddy and his pops to a favorite spot of mine. Got my dad's line in the water first and not even after a minute....12 lber. My buddies 3rd cast he got his keeper at 10 lbs. For a couple hours in between there were alot of smaller lings and it slowed down around slack tide. By noon my buddies dad and I finally pulled up a couple of 26inch 6lbers to limit out 1 each. Also caught and released a gazillion nice sized sea bass anywhere from 2.5 to 4+ pounds. We also managed a couple of nice greenlings. For an opener it was actually pretty slow going...but still a kick in the pants. I'm taking the whole week off and am gonna hit a few different spots in my newly aquired arima!

Great looking fish!!!! I am new to saltwater fishing, and was wondering if you could give me some pointers. I have 3 small boy's that just want to hook into anything at this point! I was fishing off hat island, around a bunch of other boats and saw people just slaying what appeared to be lingcod. It appeared they where throwing some sort of dark jig? I have been out 4 times and havn't caught anything. My boys are almost to the point of not wanting to go out, and I really want them to enjoy the outdoors as I did as a kid. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I have a boat at Everett marina, but am willing to drive a ways to get on some fish:)

Troy- If you want to get your boys into some fish, one of the best fast action things you can do is fish for shiner perch. They are small and more of a bait fish (which I actually use for lings ) but they are no stop action because they are so agressive and will hit anything. So much in fact that you wont get to fish becasue you will be spending all your time tending to your kids catching fish. There is a limit of 15 per day and the best way to get them is with a herring jig which you can get anywhere that sells fishing stuff. It also helps if you tip the hooks with a piece of worm or piling worm. A good place to do this is off the clinton ferry pier on whidbey and there are flounder, bigger pile perch, bull heads and sometimes even smelt (which are good eating). You can also use shiners for catching lingcod which by my standards is the only way to go. Your chances of catching a ling are probably 75% greater with live bait. Hope this helps.
