1/4/2010 1:28:00 PMFYI Fish Checkers have no authority to right tickets for infractions.... A quick 911 call will do a lot more. I believe they have authority believe it or not to enforce the fishing regs....

Gave area 10 another go with a fishing partner that hadn’t been out for almost a year. Spoke briefly with a WDFW test fishing crew before launching out of Shilshole and was informed that fishing has been slow and no spot seemed to be producing better than another. We started out fishing the Richmond beach area and notice several crab pots out. A phone call to enforcement was less than satisfying as they claimed they had no officers in the area and no boats out on the water. We fished a bit and picked up a couple of shakers but didn’t see much bait on the sonar so we packed it up and headed over to Point Monroe. We fished the outside area of Point Monroe and the inside area closed on the 1st of January. Picked up a few more shakers, these had some size to them but the bait was still minimal. Finally, we headed over to the South side of Jeff Head and started marking bait and fish with no seals in sight! This area produced our largest fish but all were undersized with one reaching 21.5”. The fish at Jeff Head seemed to prefer a mini B2 Glow squid tipped with shrimp fished on the deck in 90 to 130 feet of water. Our last fish came at 2:30pm and was followed in by a seal that stopped about 70 feet short of the boat. I’m wondering if it recognized us as it didn’t seem to hang around for the release. Coming back into Shilshole we passed the pier and saw two pot lines in the water. I told the guy crabbing was closed but he didn’t seem to care. I told the fish checker at the launch about the guy crabbing off the pier and she just shrugged it off. Anyway, she had not checked any legal fish for the day and not that many shakers either, I guess it is time to hit the rivers!
