Fished the first day of the Everett Coho Derby today with my girlfriend, Ann. I decided to go down to Shilshole Marina to launch because the past 2 weekends, I have had good success with the coho outside the marina. Plus, it's not as crowded as the northern launches for derby entrants. Got to Shilshole around 5:30 am and had our poles in the water around 6am. Not much going on until about 7:30 or so. Ann caught a very small coho (about 12 inches) and released it unharmed. I had one on my line, but lost it as soon as I could see it. Wasn't that big, maybe 3 pounds or so. About 8:15 my line snaps off the downrigger! I thought FISH ON! As soon as I grabbed by pole out of the rigger, Ann's pole fired off the rigger and her line started to peel off the reel. I thought, DOUBLE!! And on derby day! But no. My line went slack as soon as I grabbed it, but Ann was a pro with her fish. This would be the biggest fish she's ever caught. She was thrilled! She brought it the side of the boat in a matter of minutes and in the net it went. 6 lbs 15 oz. on my digital scale. We stayed out until about 9:30 at Shilshole then picked up and motored north towards Everett to the weight in. Scouting all the way up there. About 25 minutes later, we were pulling into the Everett Marina. We had her fish officially weighed and she was in second place at about 10:20 am with her 7.11 lb Coho. The biggest fish so far was 16.02 lbs caught off shipwreck earlier. As much as she would love to stay in second place, we just don't think that's going to happen. Hopefully she'll win something for her salmon, but she says she'll catch an even bigger one tomorrow. Until then . . .
