We fished Fishtrap Lake last year, and at that time had the experience of bluegill fish holding fistfights to see which one of them would be the next fish to be hooked by us. We could not get our lures down to depth because the "lunker" bluegills (think of the term "jumbo shrimp" and you get the idea). Since then the Lake has been "re-habbed". So when we pointed our trusty Liki Tiki into Fishtrap Lake again, we were wondering aloud what we would experience this time. It was pre-dawn at the boat launch, the smell and sounds of a campfire nearby in the camping area added to the anticipation of 'the FISH'. Stillness and smooth lake surface at dawn---seems to be a normal condition at our area lakes. An electric-motored trip southward from the boat launch in our fishing Battle-Cruiser (all 12' of her!) gave us plenty of vistas of basalt cliffs (where have we seen basalt cliffs before? Ummmm...), birds swarming said cliffs, associated bird-bombings suffered due to birds flyin!
g from and swarming around said cliffs, and views of jumping FISH; the fish all seemed to be around 7"- 9" long and impatient to grow any larger. Bugs were dancing on the lake surface, acting as inviting food targets for the flying fry. Around midway in the lake, we began to receive attention to our wedding ring lures topped with our "secret" dressing (these lures are cheap and reliable---they could be considered the Volkswagens of fishing lures!) and WE CAUGHT SOME BIG RAINBOWS with a little patience, prayer, and prowess. In Fishtrap Lake lurk 18"-20" Rainbows, full of fight (and flavor!) bustin' through the lake surface. THEY ARE THERE, folks. STILL THERE, TOO!...Minus 4 of them...We caught 'em clean. We LOST two others in clean get-aways... one of which actually BROKE the hook on one of my lures. (Seriously. I have the broken stub on the lure as proof...) In this case of fishing at Fishtrap, if I told you exactly WHERE in the lake we had our success, exactly WHAT we used, and HOW we did it, it wouldn't be a secret anymore.
