This afternoon I went down to my local beach, Carkeek Park. Last night I was at the beach for my son's scouting event and I couldn't even listen to the meeting because I was seeing these large schools of fish moving through the area. I am new to salmon fishing so I am a little embarrassed to be not completely sure what they were.
But anyway, this afternoon I went down in the pouring rain and was casting out gold Artic Fox spinners #4 size. Nothing happening for the first 10 minutes.... then just as I'm bringing in my lure a school of these same fish moves between me and my incoming lure.... bam! fish on. I am pretty certain that it was a juvenile Silver. Fish was about 15-16', and the body was lean and extremely silvery colored if you will,, it seemed to almost not have very pronounced scales. But a bright silver skin. Is it possible to that juvenile Silver salmon could be described as this, and then when they mature there scales become more pronounced?
Anyway, this is only my second salmon ever so it was a very cool moment. I almost couldn't get him off the hook, but I did, and he recovered and swam off.
Just one last thing on my description... when I talk about that silvery skin finish it was very similar to what a Mackeral's skin looks like. (Don't roast me, but give me some feedback) The only pics. online I can find are of mature Silvers. Also, I don't remember the mouth/gums etc, as I was trying to get him released quickly.

sea runs usually arent that silvery and have pronounced scales

i believe there the residence silvers... wait untill june and thoughs fish will have packed on a couple more pounds.. they are ferocious eaters... i fish for them especially in june and july. in area 11. i use a 5 ounce weight white dodger and white squid with a chunk of herring and troll 4 to 5 mph with 17 pulls.. and watch out set the drag loose.. loose.. they are anywhere from 4 pnds to 7-8. while fishing for these it pretty much shuts the door on any kings.. but they are a blast.... 10 years ago in area 11 the limit was four silvers and two rods.. if they were three people in the boat the action was pretty intense. i have a couple pictures that i framed of the local residence silver that was 9 pounds.. i caught him at quarter master... redondo in june is lot of fun.. thats usually where i start......

I agree with fishingboy . Sea-run cutts have a slight greenish tint to them and almost always will have sea lice . Did you happen to notice if it had red or pink lines under the jaw line? If so then it was a cutt.Pound for pound they are the hardest fighting fish out there.

nope, you cannot keep sea run cutts, and remember that the silvers aren't open til later this summer.
