I took my buddy and his two sons out crabbing north of Greenbank where over the years it has been absolutely spectacular. Like this last summer season, once again Tulalip Tribes crabbed for three weeks before the 4 day winter sport “season” opened to all of us. The result? We fished 4 pots and 1 ring for three hours to harvest 8 Dungeness all but one or two were just legal size with two just a bit larger, and 4 red rock crab which we usually don’t take because of the small body and little meat excluding the large claws. This may sound like good numbers but don’t be fooled. As I have said in pervious posts, this used to be a one hour soak with pots completely full of extra large male keepers. I’m talkin 40 crabs in a pot after one hour. So these numbers are pathetic! Anyway, it was a beautiful morning, the sun was out and it was 30 degrees Fahrenheit. The water was calm and there were others trolling in the area for blackmouth. It was a great day except for the poor numbers of crab on the sea floor. This tribal harvesting before the sport season has got to stop!
