Headed out for the first weekend in Area9 with TomS in my boat. We wanted to fish Possession, but when we rounded the corner at Mukilteo, we found big waves and wind from the South. After slugging our way out there, we concluded that Pt No Pt was the only game in town to get out of the wind and beat our way over there.
We started jigging because I am trying to get better at it. We saw no bait and got no hits. We then trolled West into Skunk Bay and got a shaker or two. We tried to troll back to the point, but the outgoing tide was pretty strong. We picked up and ran back. Good move. Bait all over the place back at the point. Went a bit past the point, turned and started trolling back West. Just about when we thought we were going to hit bottom, Tom got a hit and lost it as I was getting ready to net it. He had a HotSpot with a squid and strip. I then got a hit on a Hot Spot and Kingfisher spoon, but it didn't stay on. Replaced the hook on my Kingfisher with a Gamakatsu. Reset and tried again. This time I got a good hookup. We had a seal near us and just as the flasher hit the surface, the seal gave chase. I skied the flasher and fish to the boat and Tom netted it within 8 feet of the pursuing seal! It was 22 1/2 inches, and probably a good thing it wasn't bigger or the seal would have gotten it. Reset and tried a third time. Another hookup just as we went on the shelf. This time I got a 24 incher to the boat in front of the same seal. For a second we thought the seal got the salmon as the flasher went sideways for a bit, but it was all fish!
We were limited before lunch, and both fish were clipped, so we tried in 8-2 on the way back for more. Tom got another fish about the same size to the boat but lost it about 10 feet from the boat. Other than that, nothing more... Good trip, though.
