wow, depending on the time of day a guy or gal can just walk out on the fishermans boardwalk in westport all the way out tho the end and pull up anything from rockfish, pac cod to dogfish/sharks. on sunday evening the 2nd i went out there and noticed a couple of guys reeling in what they said were sharks, look like sharks but i believe they were dogfish, i asked some questions because i am new to saltwater fishing, went back and got the right bait and in no time i was catching these so called sharks too! only problem was it was tough reeling them in with my 8lb test and a smaller fresh water fishing pole, but i successfully got a 3 ft'r in after wokring him for quite a while tiring him out.. the next day i went and picked up a bigger rod and reel and lined it up with 20lb test grabbed a bunch more fresh bait and headed out to the boardwalk, to the very end. this was about 6pm, from there i used my small pole with a plastic worm on a hook and grabbed up 3 decent sizes rock fish between 10 and 14 inches maybe, 1 pacific cod 12in's and a crab came up one time.. ouch.. about 7:30 pm the bigger fish start coming in to feed so i setup my big pole with the 20lb test and steel leader, about half a herring on a 1/0 hook with a n ice heavy weight on to sink that sucker good.. with in no time i was getting bites, getting my bait eating and really getting a good feel for the action out there. about 8:15 rolls around.. Whamm! shark on.. he gave a good fight but with the bigger pole and 20lb test i was able to reel him in close alot easier than the night before, got him close, dropped down the crab trap, pulled him up, took a snap shot of the 3+ ft dogfish/shark what have you, released the hook easily and let him go to fight another day.. i baited back up again and with in no time after bite after bite Whamm! hooked another, this one was a little smaller but still gave a good struggle darting down the boardwalk the opposite way pulling my line good, i got him close enough again, pulled him up, took a snapshot release the hoook and off he went! it was a good time to say the least and for an inexperienced saltwater fisher here, i am now hooked, can't wait to learn more and get out there again.. THE FISHING IS GREAT IN WESTPORT!
