Played hookie from work to take advantage of the best tides around the halibut opener. Fished with fellow club member Dana out of my boat. Water was flat and the sun came out of the clouds! We tried a couple of normally good spots around Dungeness Bar with no luck in the morning. There looked to be a commercial fishing boat working on top of the bar. I couldn't tell it if was a Tribal Long Line boat, a shrimp or crab boat or what, but there were a lot of big orange buoys on the bar when we came in.
About noon we decided to chance a run out to Hein since it was still pretty flat. On our first drift, Dana got a hit that felt like he snagged bottom. A couple of minutes later, it hooked up, and he got a 48 pounder. We harpooned it, cut the gills and tied it off to a cleat. We tried to reset to go through the same area again, but the tides had changed somewhat and we drifted in a different direction. About an hour after Dana's fish, I got a hit and set the hook, but didn't get the fish. A minute or two later, it came back, and I stuck it. After harpooning our second fish of the day, we enjoyed the sunshine while my fish bled out. It went 47 pounds when we weighed it back at John Wayne. Good fishing and good weather!
