We went on our annual vacation to the Lieberhaven Resort at Obstruction Pass on Orcas Island from May 30th to June 4th. The fishing was surprisingly slow this year. Usually, we do real well on Greenling, but didn't catch one this year.

I did catch a couple of good sized piling perch (apx 13 inches) on the second day, one of which became bait for "doggie fishing" that night. I know, I know, it's embarrassing to admit you actually go out and fish for these, but it does make for fast family action (and they are a lot bigger than bluegills too!).

The poor fishing continued from the marina for the next couple of days until I went out in a kayak on the 3rd. In a couple of hours things picked up. Using a barbless hook on a 1/4 oz jig, I caught and released seven rockfish (8 to 12 inches) and a flounder. Pretty fun stuff, and playing hide and seek with a curious seal between fishing spots was entertaining.

As usual, I can't wait to go back next year. Hopefully, they will open up the crabbing season again by then by late May.
