Al and I headed back to Sprague with high hopes again. It was a chilly 18' as we pulled into the launch with no ice on the water. Water temps 34.5-38.4 today so with the forecast the ice will be there soon. We started on the east end and had 2 quick fish in the first 10 minutes with a perch Kekeda fly and a pink rippin minnow. The action lasted about 1 1/2 hours and the fishing got really tough. Late morning we decided to try the west end. We picked up 2 fish but the weeds were terrible and I doubt we were fishing much despite frequent lure checks. Fortunately with mostly sunny skies and little wind made for a nice morning on the water despite the temp. We ended up boating 9 of these great fish 18-20 inches. It was another good day on the water.

Those sure are some healthy fish. What a shame the fish and game are wasting some truly epic other fisheries on only one species. This used to be one of the premier panfish and walleye lakes that also supported these rainbows. Crying shame.

There are bass in there, folks were pulling out 4 pounders this spring, not a lot of them, but I caught one by accident casting rapalas. From various comments on the web it sounds like the bass fishery recovery is going a lot slower than hoped, not sure if this is due to the stocked rainbows, maybe more due to absence of forage like bluegills.

Fishindoc thanks for the report, looks like I won't get out there again before the lake freezes based on your temperature report. Those periods where the bite shuts down on sprague have always been something I'd like to figure out. It would be great if there was a smartphone app where people could post information in real time. Whenever I hit an hour without a bite on Sprague I wonder if it is time to make a move. It is generally pretty easy to see if any nets are coming out if you are on the east end, but you don't know what is going on at the other end. There is so much space at Sprague that I certainly would not be hesitant to share info in real time. Plus for people who are new to the lake I know there is a really steep learning curve on that lake, at least that was my experience.

Loving it!! These fish are awesome. Love seeing these reports. Thanks for sharing the reports and continuing to use the flies. I'm sure there are a few of us already thinking about ice out. - Dave
