Took my five year old son, along with my 14 and six year old nephews to Lanham Lake for the first time today. I was amazed to see that there was only car at the trailhead, located about five miles east of Stevens Pass, on this sunny Saturday. It took us about an hour to go the 1.6 miles on a moderate grade uphill (with a couple of semi-steep places). All in all, a pretty easy hike up and a very easy hike down of 45 minutes.
We had the lake to ourselves. There was only a gentle breeze on the water and the temp was a pleasant 70 degrees or so. The kids all managed to catch some fish. Six cutthroat in all, averaging eight to nine inches in size, were caught in released in an hour of fishing with barbless hook spinners and spoons. The only drawback to the lake (which looks to be about 15 acres in size) is that easy shoreline access is limited by brush and other obstacles. A float tube would come in very handy here.
All in all, a fine day trip and not a bad way to introduce some young ones to the pleasures of alpine lake fishing!
