Started too late evidently. We were out fishing after 7AM....through 11:30 AM....saw a few fish on the sounder around 50 feet but no bites....normal run of the mill sockeye gear was used. Think it is time to change things up, roll out earlier, or try a different fishery. No nets seen and not many boats out.

When they have over 20,000 fish trapped but only moved 14,000+ up to the lake....what happens to the rest????????

The rest of the fish are split between the hatchery operation and the spawning beaches to ensure smolt plants for future runs (https://pse.com/aboutpse/PseNewsroom/MediaKit/001_Baker_River_Fact_Sheet.pdf). Annual hold back for is typically 6,000-7,000 fish.

Currently, the Baker Lake spawning escapement is just under 6,000 fish. The PSE hatchery program is costly but very well run. The potential for the fishery is stagering. Concidering a few years ago the fishery did not exist and a few years befor that the run was on the verge of extinction we have a gift in our backyards, enjoy the fishery. Even if no fish make their way into the box the experience is priceless.

All that said, these fish will bite all day and we have caught many Baker Lake sockeye outside of the traditional morning bite.

The numbers were finally updated (8-3-16). 14,750 transferred to the lake, 22,270 trapped, so 7,520 held back. Between last Thursday (7-28-16), and today (8-3-16), there were only 220 fresh fish transferred to the lake out of the 733 that were trapped. Lets hope they keep coming.
