I met Glenn and Cami at the launch just after 5am. It was supposed to get up to the mid 90’s. The idea was to get our limits and get done before the heat. Well the fish didn’t get the message.

Glenn had a fish on as he was putting out his rigging out but didn’t get it in. I had one on in the first few minutes but did not know until I watched the film when I came home. Unfortunately it was on for about 10 minutes before it got loose. I have now learned that if a fish swims with the lure, not fighting it, it won’t show in the rod tip. Also that some of those nips get the bait and you might not see the nip.

The end result was I got the first fish in the boat, a small cutthroat about 9am. But that fish was on for about 11 minutes before I brought it in. I was 30 feet down on the downrigger. I caught fish with a Wannafish A Lure’s Pink Splatter Squiddy Thing. Glenn got the biggest cutthroat in at 14.5 inches. He also got the only kokanee. He was 10 feet down on the rigger. Both his were caught with a Bahama Mama and WAL Mini Squiddy Thang Pink.

The water temperature was over 68 degrees. We fished mostly 45-60 feet of water then after 3 hours moved to deeper water.

In the over 4 hours of filming this lake had less fish than on Alder or Clear Lake. The water was clear as I went down as far as 40 feet. I have to figure out how to see the rod tip since I had fish on and bites I did not see.

Might try using the rubber band trick. Loop a common rubber band around your fishing line, opposite end of rubber band place into dr clip. Should be much more line movement transfer to rod tip with that bungie type connection, less ridgid. When downrigger fishing, smaller fish are harder to detect when hooked up. Two of those fish look to be 8", they do not pull very hard.

Recall the good ol' days of the "cow bells" or "pop gear", hard to tell a small fish was hooked up with the strain of that gear pulling on a trout rod! Not much different than connecting to a downrigger ball.

Could also try a lighter, 4lb dr ball if your not already using one. I doubt that would have much different results, does however make for much easier dr cranking.
