I met Mike Carey at the Alder Lake Park just after 7am because I was late and he wasn’t. He was in high anticipation to catch kokanee! I had doubts that we would catch anything. The morning proved us both wrong.
The sky was cloudy with the sun coming out a little and later we got a peak at the mountain. The water was 62 degrees on the surface. It was calm when we started out but later it got breezy. We hauled the gear up about noon.
We both have two rod endorsement. I stacked mine on the down rigger. Mike wanted to use his planer boards and I can’t remember what weight he put on. These did very well catching the native cutthroat trout. He brought in the first kokanee, also. Even though it might have only been 8 inches. I told him I would cook it up. Panko fried kokanee is good.
I used Dick Nite Pink Splatter dodger with Wannafish A Lure Mini Squiddy Thang Pink with a gold blade. The other rod had first a Nickle Clown and Mini Still-fishing Spinner and then switched to Dick Nite Copper Hot Orange Tractor Tread UV with Orange and Gold from Wannafishalure.com. I caught trout and 1 kokanee which I added to Mike’s and had for dinner.
In all I think it was a 5 star day if we change our goal from kokanee to trout. So I was wrong thinking that we would not catch anything and Mike didn’t get his kokanee he had hoped for.
I fished most of the time between 15-28 feet and twice on my filming I watched Mike’s dodger go past my lure so I think he was deeper than I was.
When I cleaned the trout at home I found several little fish in them…are they bass?
In the underwater filming I did there were a lot of fish that went by my lure. I will post it later.

Nice job guys. Yes that is a little but tasty looking koke. The bones are easier to chew right....like a sardine.

Yes Mike for sure. Hunter757 I have never noticed any bones. I filet them. The bigger ones just don't taste the same-or it might be the texture-they would have to cook longer. The little ones are perfect. I use the little ones for kokanee pizza, too.

Good job, Toni and Mike. I used to fish Alder for Kokanee many years ago... they were always on the small side, but lots of them. The bite really doesn't pick up until the hot weather of July and August, as the lake water is very cold, fed from the Nisqually glacier. Best fishing for the Kokes was always near the dam. The lake does hold some big Cutthroat, though. Used to catch some trolling off the mouth of the Little Nisqually, toward the southeast corner of the lake. In my opinion, the stomach contents of the Cutthroat are LM Bass fry. BTW your Panko fried fish looks delicious!!! PTL!

HI Toni. I thought I would throw in my thoughts. Although a Washington native, I grew up in northern Alabama and did quite a bit
of fishing there. When I saw those pics of what was in the stomachs of your fish they looked very familiar. So I did a search on Bing
images of young black crappie and sure enough, there was a match. I suspect due to the early warm weather the black crappie
have spawned a little earlier this year and the larger fish are feeding on the young.
