Well decided to go hit up the P.O river for some largies.. we knew it was low, but not that low. Get to Morton slough around 830. Try to launch, get the back tires of the truck half way submerged.. she's not going. Shotgun run to sandpoint to launch there. Same story there.. but it's a drop off to 5 ft. We launch and the canal out is maybe half a foot to a foot if you were lucky.. after some manuvering around get out into 5 foot of water and just go.. hit a main lake point to try for some smallies.. start in 15 ft end up in 3 ft of water. Mark fish in the 5 ft range of all places, but no hookups.. we decide to go up the river...
We made a pit stop by the train bridge to fish some pilings, the current was just a ripping through there.. after getting to the Eddies, I was marking tons of fish. But they wouldn't commit to a lure.. make our way up river. Super shallow and super sketchy ride (20 ft to 4 ft in an instant) we fished the weed lines and took us about an hour to hook up with one largie on a senko, then a squaw fish on a swimbait by my buddy, after some time I was yo-yoing a little paddle tail and I look away then look back and all I see is a big flash of green and white on my little lure and then it disappears into the weeds.. sad time. Repeat the technique, hook into a good crappie. We move down the river some more to the Morton area. Some duck and goose hunters blasting away. Had an eagle circle us 4 times about 75 in the air. That was pretty cool, anyways we fish down the far side of the Morton area along the weed line. Jj hooks into a pound and a half largie which swallows the hook. A little manuvering and it's out with little harm to the fish. We get to a big big flat in 8 f.o.w... I'm still chucking my KGM swimbait and I get bumped..... hard. Reel up, cast back out she smokes it right next to the boat. I see it and it looks like a good sized pize. Monster squaw fish. 23 inches.. I wanna say around 4 or 5 pounds. That got my blood flowing. Two casts later in get bumped again. Reel up cast out couple cranks in she hits it like a damn freight train. I couldn't even reel it for a few seconds... about the same size as the last they were loving that KGM... downsize to my little paddle tail. And I've been getting schools of perch to follow me (natural A-rig). One bites my tail and holds on long enough to be swung into the boat... we decide to run back at 340. And good timing too. Was starting to get windy and rainy as soon as we left.. almost beaching the boat in the canal by the launch we manuver in and get on our merry way.. first time fishing the big lake. Second for the river. . Average day I would say.
