This is a combined report for 7/21 and 7/22. Took my brother up to Baker Lake for our annual camping/fishing trip Monday through Wednesday. We launched the boat and set up camp Monday night, and fished Tuesday and Wednesday.
7/21: I set the alarm for 0230 Tuesday and we headed down to the boat at 0330. Probably a little earlier than needed but I always like to be out there early because the morning bite here can be insanely good and I do not want to miss it. Our first take down was just after 6am, and I managed to land a 24" hen at a depth of about 60 feet. My depths are an estimate because I am probably the only person on Baker lake without downriggers. We set all 3 or our rods to the same depth and continued trolling. Over the next few minutes my brother hooks into 2 fish that end up getting away, then managed to land another 24"hen. On the next pass I landed my 2nd sockeye, another 24" hen. I had 1 more take down and then that was the action was over for us. All of our action was on the Shannon creek side of the lake. In all I think we saw about a dozen other fish caught.
7/22: I fished alone on Wednesday. I got an extra 30 minutes of sleep and didn't go down to the boat until a little after 0400. The fishing was much slower than Tuesday. By 0700 I had not had a bite, and had only seen 1 other person catch a fish. I had been on the Shannon creek side of the lake all morning so I turned and started trolling across to the other side of the lake. Almost exactly in the middle of the lake, I started to doze off, then when I opened my eyes my rod tip was 6 inches under water. I woke right up and brought in my 1st fish of the day. Quickly set the lines back in the water and started a slow circle around to pass through that spot again. It took 15 minutes to come back around, and then I notice my rod tip bouncing ever so slightly. By the time I got my hands on it, the tip was under water again. Brought my 2nd and final fish to the boat and that was the last action I saw for the day. Both fish were 24" hens just like the day before, and about 60 feet down again.
We got bonus entertainment on Tuesday when the PSE truck backed down the boat ramp and dumped a fresh load of sockeye into the lake.
