I tried this walleye fishing at Banks last week. I heard you're supposed to go slow, but at 0.8 mph and 1 oz of lead in 15 feet of water, isn't your line going straight down under the boat? Or is it supposes to get straight down? I switched to 1/2 oz and about 1.5mph just to get it away from the boat. Was that a mistake? I caught tons of the smaller ones, and no keepters. I used the same method at Banks earlier in the spring one two different trips and did pretty well. On the advice of a local gentleman I used the Macks Chartruese Wallypop and he suggested the spin n glo with the Slow Death Hooks. Both worked well. As far as the speed concerns, 0.8 worked just fine with the indicated weight of the bottom bouncers. At Banks I was in 35 to 50 feet of water, at Potholes - not greater than 20 feet (again on the advice of a gent at the ramp). The fish were caught in 15 feet of water - no shallower or deeper - they just stuck to 15 feet. I generally used the 45 degree rule and it worked great at 0.8 mph. (That 45 degree is simply to let your line out such that it is 45 degrees from the surface - effectively making a right triangle. If you use the math it will give you the exact depth - but please don't make this more difficult than necessary.) That speed is confirmed on 4 different gps devices so it was accurate. It just worked. I much preferred the fish size at Potholes but there were certainly more dinks at Banks. If you caught fish at whatever speed you used - it was a great day. Any day fishing is better than any alternative I know. There are much better fishermen than I - for me it's just what I want to do - ALL THE TIME!
