Day two for this trip. Fished Barker Flats along with five other boats - 40- 50 ft with Mack's Smile blade and worms with the Slow Death Hook behind 1.5oz bottom bouncers. Boated the limit but missed one huge "eye" - she released just at the boat - would have liked to have gotten the picture but better off she stayed in the water. Would have released her in any case. Great day - weather moving in tomorrow so best be getting home. Coeur D'Alene pike and salmon await. May come back here in a few weeks and try again at the flats. Great campground - launch is good but a bit shallow. Can't argue with the fishing - enough for a couple of dinners on any case. All trolling done on the electric - 0.5 - 0.8 - nice and quiet. Caught a bunch of perch in the process - 8-10" and just pestered me to no end. Not enough meat to fillet so just let them swim off. All in all this has been a good trip though it short by incoming weather - will be back soon.
Played with a number of different options and seeking out these walleye. Seems like the smile blade in the slow death hook with the worm worked the best. Fell for some of the marketing hype around the Berkley gulp baits and when compared natural bait they didn't work at all. Identical rigs just different baits and the worms always were hit. Never a tap on the artificial bait. Probably something I'm doing wrong but it was fun to try and test the marketing hype. Probably spent too much money on the artificial baits but hopefully they'll keep forever. Can always try them on other fish as well.

Thanks for the report. My buddy has been telling me about barker flats and it a great place for walleye. I am going to make my first trip there soon. I took the family to potholes on my first trip for walleye and it was good. I hope the same is for banks. Safe trip home

I have good luck using the Berkley Gulp killer crawler which is designed for slow death hooks. Usually they work as good or better than real crawlers. I can usually catch two to three fish with the artificial and the perch do not bother them as much. Sometimes I even catch bigger fish with the fake. The gulp minnows have never worked for me jigged or trolled with regular spinner harnesses or slow death. Sometimes, they only want the real thing. I usually run two rods, one with each bait, to see what they prefer. Do not give up on the gulp just yet because some days they are the best thing to use.
