First of all, its hard to believe I'm sending a report for Banks Lake on February 8th for walleye. The entire lake is ice free as of this weekend. The water temperatures are 38-39 degrees in the main lake.
Found a good number of walleye in the 16-20 inch range in water depths of 35-50 feet. Caught several fish vertical jigging blade baits, but I really wanted to put the new Mack's Lure SpinDrift Walleye Rig to the test. It did not disappoint. The combination of the Smile Blade, float, and VMC SpinDrift hook is going to be deadly on walleye. The built in swivel on the hook eliminates line twist and allows the hook to turn when fighting a fish.
My speed this weekend was slow, slow, slow. I found the best success to be .5-.8 mph. I was using a whole nightcrawler on the SpinDrift as I normally do not pinch my crawlers.
I have openings this month and early March if you're itching to get some early season walleye for the dinner table.
