Headed out to Green Lake this AM, with the promise of being joined in the later morning by my friend Pete. Arrived at 7:00, lines in the water by 7:15. Cloudy with a bit of drizzle, temp at outset was 46 degrees, slight breeze from the south. Fishing the northeast shoreline, water temp at 48 degrees. Began fishing with fl. orange Power Eggs, both rigs, 3' leaders. 7:30 had my first hit, reeled in a 12 1/2" Rainbow... ten minutes later, hard hit, fish jumped three times and came unbuttoned about 10' from net... heavy fish. Ten minutes more and another heavy fish on, got him to within inches of the net and the hook popped off... fish sat in the shallows long enough for me to take a scoop with the net, but as soon as the net hit it's tail, it boogied on out to deeper water. Turned around and saw my other rod tip dancing, and reeled in my second, a 13" 'er... four fish on in first 45 minutes, landed two... this is the kind of fishing I have become used to at Green Lake! Next three hours produced only a few light hits, with no hook-ups... tried all my baits, various colors of PE & Power Bait, spin-casting... NADA! At about 11:00, Pete joined me and brought with him a bunch of his Greek luck! He began fishing what we affectionately refer to as his "hunny-hole" and within fifteen minutes had his first, a beautiful Rainbow that stretched the tape to 16". Pete was able to stay with me until 1:30, during which time he landed five great Rainbows, two at the 16" mark. I caught my third about 11:45, then fished Pete's "hunny-hole" after he left, and caught three more there and another off a different shoreline. Total for the day was seven Rainbows, five of which were 14" or a bit over. Every fish caught today was on the fl. orange PE.
Day remained cloudy with showers off and on, heavier rains came about 3:00, left the lake about 4:00. Hardly any fishing pressure at all. Saw only three other fishermen in my vicinity, they stayed a couple of hours and left without any fish. To catch fish in these late season days, you have to put in some time on the water! Considering the excitement that will be generated by the 10" Spring plants in March and April, these beautiful fish are worth it!!! Have a very Merry Christmas!... and, "GO HAWKS!!" PTL!
