Day didn't start out with much promise, barometer had plunged overnight with the approaching storm... heavy rain and winds forecast for the day. I accepted the challenge and arrived at the lake at 7:00 AM, lines in the water by 7:20. Temp at the outset, a balmy 54 degrees, cloudy but not a breeze. Water temp at the east shoreline was 48 degrees. Began with "go to", fl. orange Power Eggs on one rig, chartreuse on the other, both with 3' leaders. About 7:45, had first hit and reeled in a beautiful 14 1/2" Rainbow... fought all the way to the net (fl. orange PE)! Wind began to pick up at about 8:00, then came the rain. Had rain the rest of the day, at times very heavy. Could not coax a bite for next several hours, though I tried various baits and spin-casting several spinners and spoons. Did have two big fish follow my perch pattern Kastmaster to the shoreline, but no hook-ups. About 11:00, had another solid hit and reeled in my second of the day, a 12 1/2" 'Bow (chartreuse PE). Had several more subtle hits without hook-ups in the early afternoon, then about 1:00, rod tip doubled over and was into a heavy fish... leaped several times and made a couple of runs before bringing to the net my third, a 16" Rainbow, caught off the bottom with worms. Some really heavy rain during the later afternoon, skies darkened, so switched back to fl. orange PE and caught my fourth, a 14" 'Bow at 3:30. Left the lake at 4:00 to beat some of the traffic home.
The bite has definitely slowed at Green Lake, but still some gorgeous fish to be caught if one is willing to brave the elephants... er, elements! One side benefit is the lack of other fishermen in the area. Saw only two others who set up not far from me, lasted two hours and left without a bite. Even the Cormorants have seemed to have given up their pursuit of the fish, saw only a few individuals on the lake, no flocks. Watched an eagle snag a gull out of a large flock on the north end of the lake... survival of the fittest!
Wishing all a very Merry Christmas! PTL!
