Got there at 7:30. Put on a home-made jig and hooked one right away. After a few more casts I switched to a dark rooster tail and caught another on the 1st cast.

As I was putting the 2nd fish on the stringer, disaster struck and the first fish bolted and the stringer went in the water and it started to swim away. Without thinking, I jumped in feet first and grabbed at the stringer, which made the fish dart further out - I then DOVE after the stringer and caught it. I stated out loud "I can't believe I just F---ing did that! I'm soaking wet!"

I got out with my stringer and a photographer was standing there open mouthed....then asked "Can I take a picture of you?", to which I replied "You mean you MISSED THAT?!? Sure... sure... take the photo...I'm soaking wet!"

It was about 7:50 and 35 degrees, so needless to say, my feet were pretty cold - I had a down-filled bib exposure suit that managed to keep out most of the water, but my arms, lower legs (where it came up under the suit) and feet were soaking wet. I stuck around, wrung out my socks and went on to catch my limit before 10am...even throwing a half dozen back that I didn't want.

Awesome day and a great fish story!!

Good work. When that happened to me last weekend I would have absolutely have done the same thing. If I wasn't floating in about 14 feet of water!

One thing to mention though. I have learned the hard way to ALWAYS bring a spare pair of socks. It doesn't matter if I'm going on a 6 mile one way hike, or a drive to Greenlake. You never know. Today for example. My expectation was to not get wet, at all. But turns out my raft was leaking. Not air - somehow water was getting INTO my fully inflated raft! I need to investigate what the F is going on there. I ended the day soaked from toe to where it had wicked up to upper thigh level. Solution? Light weight AND heavy weight spare socks in the backpack, just in case!!

Doesn't sound like a backup pair of socks would have save him..... oy. Freezin cold and now soakin wet.

Great save. I lost a stringer to the water depths once in cottage lake. I did not dive in after it but I did later fall into that same lake by accident and continued to fish after... that was more towards the summer.

Is this a disaster weekend or what!? Good that you survived it and still got limit.

Not sure what I would have done. Maybe cast out and hook up the stringer...? A spare shirt and socks are a must - especially for you.
Thanks Pat for your tips and although I missed you at 7:30am this morning, I did make it out to Green lake today. I will submit my report in a bit. Happy fishing!
