Have been enjoying some really decent panfish fishing during the heat of the Summer. Met Pete at Silver Lake a bit after 6:00 AM, went to the southwest side of the lake, looking for perch... my son and I had done well on Saturday afternoon. Temp at 63 degrees at outset, water temp a toasty 78 degrees at the shoreline. Using worms under a small float. Went to the pier at the far south of the park first, thinking that the perch may be in deeper water early in the morning. Set my float at about 7' and covered the entire area to the front and sides of the pier. Took a while to find them, but after about an hour, reeled in two perch off the north corner of the pier, in addition to a half dozen small LMB. By 8:00, the sun was climbing higher in the sky and the temp was rising... moved to the shoreline just south of the swimming area and began to have hits. Not the non-stop action that my son and I had experienced two days earlier, but still lots of fun. This type of fishing was new to Pete, but he persevered and soon got the hang of setting the hook under a float and was hauling them in left and right. Caught small LMB, 6 to 1 over the perch (all C&R)... kept 12 perch, from 6" to a couple of behemoths of 9". Made a nice pile of fillets for the deep-fryer. Left the lake about 1:00... better fishing may be in the afternoon!? Great sport on UL gear, and something to keep us from going "stir-crazy" while the trout are sulking in deep water and the coho are a few weeks out. PTL!
