My second experience with Ballinger was much different. This time rather than casting, I decided to go with the herd and fish on the bottom. But I refuse to use powerbait. I have no interest in hatchery trout. I used nightcrawlers.
Well, for a trout lake, I'm not sure what went on last night. Between 8:15 and 9:15 I caught a sculpin, a perch, a pumpkinseed, and a bullhead. Zero trout. Sculpin maybe 3 inches, perch probably 5-6 inches, pumpkinseed even smaller than the sculpin, I have no idea how it got the hook in it's mouth, and the bullhead about 5-6 inches also.
I am the king of catching minnows.
I talked to a guy who said his kid had been out with a bobber and worm in recent times, also off the dock, and caught a similar zoo ... including small mouth bass and bluegill and crappie.
So apparently, this trout lake has all manner of stuff in it, as long as you fish with a worm.
The guy I was talking to was casting a big plastic grub into the lily pads. As with my last trip when I was casting, he got no bites.
Perhaps this weekend I will get my rubber raft out and see what can be found, other than trout, somewhere other than the dock.
