We arrived at Baker Lake Thursday afternoon with high hopes of a cooler full of Sockeye when leaving Sunday. After the first couple hours on the water my hopes of the faded and I was gonna be happy to even put a fish in the box. Thursday night at 700pm it finally happened, my 27' rod bounced and unclipped and the fight was on. Peeling line, jumping, ran past the boat, all the good sockeye moves that bring me back to this lake. We called it a night not to long after that and prepared for Friday. Friday brought a considerably amount of boat traffic and no fish, I seen a total of three caught. Saturday it rained and rained. We had multiple take downs but could not get a fish into the boat.

Sunday morning was a different story. After a lot of prep work and planning we hit the water with a mission. We started at on the noisy creek side of the lake. Rods down at 445 and I fired up the stove to start the coffee. Fish in the boat at 450 am. Now that's the Baker Lake I know. While the fishing wasn't red hot Sunday we averaged a fish an hour including one double. We lost a few others including one very jumpy fish that my daughter was trying to wrestle in. All of our fish where caught towards the middle of the lake with no pattern what so ever. All of our fish were caught between 28-20' down on the cable. Any deeper or shallower resulted in nothing. Slow speed won the race with speeds of .7-.8 being most effective and most fish coming of the inside rod on a turn. We ended the day with 7 very bright and fat Sockeye. One word of advice for Baker, if you think you are going slow enough, go a little slower.

Gear used------ Mack's Lures "Double D" Dodgers in Chrome and White UV. Behind those we pulled a variety of hoochies with blades in some colors not everyone else was using, and it worked very well for us! Our hooks were tipped with chunks of Shrimp bathed in my favorite mix of Sockeye approved herbs and spices.

While this weekend had a great finish, it was a tough one. I think I am still wore out. But fishing is only gonna get better and soon everyone will be pulling limits of big, hard fighting Baker Lake Sockeye.

Thank you Norm, Tony, Kenny and Mike for staying with me at the camp site, me and my family had a great weekend!
