Went out to Lake Ballinger this afternoon to try my hand at kayak fishing. I'm heading into my second season with the pole holder that I installed and I'm definitely ready to get some miles on it. I hit the lake at about 4:00 pm-ish and stayed until about 6:00 pm. I caught 1 mid-sized rainbow. A little disappointed, but at least it was larger than average sized, so I guess I'll live.

Really only tried rainbow colored power bait, with two different weight configurations. The first was a mid-sized setup. Didn't feel a nibble, so I added a shot to it to get it deeper. After about 15 minutes of being fairly deep I landed the only fish of the day. Am debating whether or not to head back out tomorrow morning or catch another lake.

There was a constant light breeze and guess that it gust up to about 6 mph.

Kayak fishing is a tricky beast. I can't figure out if it is the color of my boat (red) or just not adding enough weight to the set up. I'll keep playing around with it to get it dialed in. I must say, there is nothing like it though. Paddling along with a line in the water, bald eagles flying above, and the baby ducks and geese out on the water. Pretty cool place we live in.

Past experience notes that the south end of the lake (closest to 244th/205th) is where the fish are. Worm and green power bait with a little bit of weight or drag a fly.seem to be the ticket.

Take yer kayak, and go up to Rattlesnake lake tomorrow.
Drag some olive woolly bugger flies. If your not in the know.. Stop by any fly shop, (The Avid Angler)
If no fly rod... Fish them from spinning rod, beaded head for depth.
Much prettier than Ballinger, and you should do very well
