Fished Saturday evening (4/26 from about 1700 to about 2000) in hopes of attracting a kokanee to fill out my limit for the day.

Ran an assortment of gear including the orange/gold sling blade and tequila sunrise wiggle hoochie combo that produced for me at Park Lake that morning. Also ran Green Thang and Orange Thang from Wannafishalure with this sling blade. Also used copper FST as dodger with red spin-n-glo and some pink combos. No kokes bit but had plenty of fun catching and releasing a number of RBT for my effort. All of these combos got bit except Green Thang (but it didn't get a very long run).

Ran surface gear and also dropped down into schools mid water and near bottom. No takers on the down rigger gear. All biters were on the surface gear.

If you're familiar with the lake, there are numbers marked on the steep canyon walls. Most fish were hooked between number 2 and number 6. All trout hooked were first year fish and were a bit larger than the ones I caught at Park Lake. Looked like a strain from a different hatchery based on the coloring/markings of these fish.

It was a bit windy for most of the evening and I thought I might also get rained on but the showers passed over the next ridge (many were just virga anyway). For the first time in my life I saw the beginnings of a water spout (a little spooky). Large gust came down the canyon and got bottled up where it narrows. The wind picked-up 50-100 gallons of water easy-as-you-please and started to spin it up. Fortunately, it took about 2-3 turns then splashed back into the lake. Good thing too as I was trolling only about 100 yards downwind.

A good evening to be out on the lake even if the kokes were less than cooperative.

Tight Lines All!

Thanks for the report. Info. lists lake trout (mackinaw) as a species that is present in deep lake. Any chance those large arches at 50 ft. are lake trout? Thanks

Thanks for the report and yea that is pretty typical over there where the weather can turn on a dime! I was on Park lake last year and saw some ominous clouds moving in and just as I got the boat in all hell broke loose with lightning and thunder pounding the hills above! Glad you made it safe. I have also read that about mackinaw but have never heard of any catching them out of deep. What I also found was as you went from 35 feet deep to over 100 I would get more kokanee's

If there are Mackinaw in Deep that may explain why all those kokanee that are being stocked are not being caught in bunches. I think there are few food sources mac's like better than kokanee. Next time out on Deep I'll have to bounce the bottom with an Ace Hi Fly and see if I can find one...just to say I did!

The WDFW planted Deep Lake in the early 80's 4 times with lake trout (about 4,000) each time. If those fish survived, then they could weigh 20 lbs. Most people mistake brook trout for lake trout like what happened in Yellowstone lake. If there are small lake trout in Deep, then that means that there are some large fish present for propagation. It is possible that none of the fish survived the original plants. WDFG quit planting lake trout all together in the state of WA in 2000.

Interesting...have they killed-off the lake since then? I know they did over at Park Lake circa 2006 to get rid of the overpopulated and stunted spiny rays.
