Fished day one of the Lester V. Smith pike tourney on Cda Lake yesterday, along with 99 other boats. Weather was cloudy, rainy and windy with some breaks throughout the day. I guess I need to work on my early season pike skills. After managing only 2 pike last weekend while prefishing the main lake, we decided to try the chains in hopes of boating a limit, then go to the main lake and look for some bigger fish. That plan was a bust. We got 2 midget pike about 14 or 15" in about 3 hours of fishing. Moved to another chain lake and got nothing. Moved out to the main lake and finally found the lone keeper for the day. A single 23 1/2" fish doesn't exactly keep you in the running in a tourney like this. There are some very talented pike fishermen in this one. Big fish for the day was at or close to 15 pounds and there were several over 10.
We opted to stay home and not burn a bunch more fuel and battle the weather today. We will bow out and save gas money for another day.
