Wanted to try new (for me) waters this weekend, so picked up my friend Pete and headed for Silver Lake. Arrived at o'dark thirty (7:00 AM) and were set up and fishing by 7:30. A chilly 43 degrees at the start, not a breeze, lake a flat calm. Water temp off the pier was 48 degrees at a depth of 25'. I set up one rig with a nightcrawler, one with Power Eggs (pink). Almost immediately we started getting hits, but couldn't buy a hook-up... fish were just mouthing the bait... hits on nightcrawlers and PE of several colors. About 9:00 I changed up to shrimpmeat, had several bites, then finally a hook-up and reeled in a nice 14" Rainbow. Rest of the morning followed suit, lots of subtle bites, but nothing solid. About 11:00, Pete's rod doubled over and he was into a really big fish... peeling off line, finally got it turned, only to have it make a beeline under the dock where it broke off the hook on something... took red PE, so most likely a big trout, but never able to get a look at it. About 1:00, Pete finally was able to tie into another fish, and landed another Rainbow of 14". Afternoon brought southerly winds that were cold, temp dropped some and we called it a day at 2:30.
Very nice lake to spend more time on... lots of fish hitting the surface all day long. Will certainly make it back here in the future. Have a Merry Christmas everyone! PTL!
