If WDFW was interested in stirring up some Fall fishing activity by these Fall plants of new fish, they succeeded in spades!!! Met Pete at the lake at 7:00 AM, lines in the water at 7:15. Fellow WA Laker Byron (Gort) already at the shoreline. We fishing with Power Eggs (pink & chartreuse). I tried casting spinners when it became light enough. Heavy fog at the outset, air temp was chilly 45 degrees. Gort was in the "hot spot" and landed several fish before we had a bite. Water temp at 58 degrees, about optimum for the Rainbows. About 8:00, Pete landed his first... me, no bites... by 9:30, Pete had his five, me one... Pete was on the "hunny hole". When Pete limited, I took over his "lucky spot" and in the next hour filled out my limit. My spinners produced nothing, so by 9:00 I was into Power Eggs alone... both pink and chartreuse seemed to produce equally well. Fish ranged from 11 1/2" to 16"... were very feisty, putting up great fights and are truly beautiful, full-colored and chunky trout.
By 9:00 the shoreline was packed with fishermen... word has certainly gotten out about the great Green Lake fishery this Fall! Good to see Phillip (HULI_ISDA) and his father out after a rough morning at the Snohomish. When I left Pete's "hunny hole", Phillip slid in and had his first fish inside of five minutes!
The newly planted fish average 1# and are in the 15" to 16" range, which presents a real problem for the growing Cormorant contingent at the lake. Twice I watched a Cormorant come to the surface with a fish in it's beak which it simply could not swallow. After a violent wrestling match at the surface, the trout was able to make it's escape... hooray for our side! Still plenty of fish in the lake, though they are becoming more difficult to hook... should be good fishing for weeks to come! The Browns will begin to show as the water cools down a bit more, too! PTL!
