My son-in-law, Trevor, is out from Ohio for the week... had never caught a Rainbow, so we headed out for a morning's fishing at Gissberg. Weather was pleasant, albeit a bit windy... 58 degrees at arrival, about 7:30 AM. Water temp at the southwest corner shoreline was 64 degrees. Started with Power Eggs on my pole, marshmallows and worms on his. Tried a couple different colors of PE over the first hour, then about 9:00, had a hard hit on chartreuse. Fish cleared the water three times, a nice big Rainbow, but threw the hook just as we were getting ready to net it. Changed Trevor over to PE as well, and about 9:30 his pole bent double... fish on! He did a terrific job of fighting the fish to the net, a 16" beautiful Rainbow... his first! Had a couple bites over the next hour and a half, then near 11:00 I had a humungous hit and reeled in a very chunky 16" 'Bow as well. Trevor did a masterful job of netting. A half hour later, Trevor reeled in his second fish of the morning, a more conventional "stocker" of 9 1/2'. We left the lake at about noon, to make a stop at Cabela's before the ride home to spend the afternoon with the ladies.
All in all, a wonderful morning with my son-in-law, enhanced by the fact it is my birthday.... no better way to mark the passage of time, than to reflect upon the hundreds of fishing trips with sons and friends, now with grandsons... and the hundreds of times on lake or stream by myself... my life would be so much poorer without the sport I love, fishing. Arnold Gingrich wrote, "Your headiest success as an angler begins when you start caring more about fishing than the fish".
