Fished this lake today after getting off work in the afternoon. Got there around five, while getting my tube and rod together I talked to a dude who was just pulling his boat into the launch. He said he got five of the planted trout trolling a small brass dick nite. Asked if they were hitting good, and he said he had only ten hits total. Not real hot, but not a total bust for him either. I started out by dragging an size eight royal coachman tied with a calf hair wing across the lake. Nothing, not even a nudge by a trout. Almost always I've done good on this fly early in the season on hatchery plants, but not today. Well I took that off and tied on a green carey. Trolled that around for about fifteen minutes, nothing here either. I also haven't seen any trout rising too, and was thinking that maybe it might be one of those days. By this time I was over on the far west end of the lake when I saw one rise. Then another, and a couple more. I cut the carey fly off and tied on a 16 softhackle griffiths gnat, after noticing some small flies cruising along the surface. A few casts and no takers so I cut that fly off and tied on a 14 pass lake. A fish hit the fly but I was too slow in the set and missed him, the next hit I was too quick and jerked the fly out of the fish's mouth. Got a few more hits but couldn't connect. Finally I managed to get a solid hook up, and pulled in a six inch perch. Bummer, let it go and proceeded back to the launch cause I had to leave to hit a store before it closed. So I trolled back to the launch and when I was right in front of the launch I had a fish hit. Lost that one when I had him close. I did one turn in front of ramp and had another good hit. But it was time to leave. Oh well not the best day I've ever had. I'll try this lake later, maybe next week. The fish are there, somewhere. Nice thing was I was the only one out on the lake. I imagine it will pick up after a couple of warmer days, so I'm not gonna write the lake off yet.
