After a week off, we were really itching to fish. We decided to go for another late afternoon and evening bite.
There was a brisk wind for the first 2 hours which was actually welcome as it kept us from being too hot as it was mostly sunny. Then after we had a hot dog barbecue in the boat, the wind settled down to almost flat calm by the time we trailered the boat via spotlight and head lamps.
We fished 3:30-9:30pm. The water temperature hadn't changed much over the last two weeks. It was 72.7. It likely didn't warm because of the severe thunderstorms that rolled through here the last ten days.
You know when nothing goes right on the water you either get mad or laugh? K. was a good sport and laughed, and for that matter made us all laugh. He was everywhere but in the water. He was hooked high in trees, low on rocks, his rod flew apart twice, he threw off a non-floating lure, back casted and the lure landed in the sunskirt of his hat, yanked a lure out of tree that wacked me in the back of the head and stuck in my hair. It was just plain crazy. Somehow he still landed six fish.
I was in the lead from the very beginning and was sure I was going to claim big fish and most fish, but P. surged from behind to pass me for a short while. And at the very end of the evening as we were heading back to ramp, I tied him though he did get the largest fish. We each caught and released 22 fish. Mine were all LMB except one pumpkinseed. No worms were harmed in the events of the day. We all stayed with crankbaits all day.
This trip we boated more large fish than all year. All but a couple could have been "eaters". The largest was 12" but super fat and wide. We saw a few larger, but couldn't get them to bite. We also each lost 8-10 fish. Who knows what they were.
In the end we boated 60 fish total. Too much fun. We're all sore today, but wish we could go again right now.
