My brother-in-law and I fished Cranberry in the state park on Wednesday
(4-12-00). The weather was great. The water temp was 60 degrees. There
was a light on-shore breeze off the salt water. We started fishing about
10am, trolling this way and that searching for fish on the Hummingbird.
Finally found a few on the screen at the south end and along the edges
amongst the milfoil. Most were hanging in between 4 to 8 feet. He was
using a plethora of flatfish and hotshots. I spent most of my time (He was
driving the boat.) dragging this fly and that fly, changing flies and lines
(to achieve different depths) pretty regularly. I tried, as we moved
alone, a few casts into the shore line where the milfoil was hoping to tempt
them into at least rising and rejecting or, heaven forbid, striking at my
patterns. Mostly I kept my patterns below the surface in ranges between 3
to 10 feet. Well, it was a nice three hour boat ride. Enjoyed the skies,
the jets (sounds of freedom, you know), the sandwiches and chips, the good
conversation the fish we had caught in time past and about the fish we were
going to catch in the near future. That's why they call it fishing and not
catching fish. I think that with all the tempting flies and lures we used,
we had the fish if not scared, pretty darned worried that we might just find
the right stuff to bring about their demise.
