Second boat on the water at 0450. The "plan" was to troll a flat line until I was in 60'+ of water and take temperature readings. Before reaching that depth, I hooked and landed a little 10" and thought "OK, there be kokanee!". The rest of "the plan" was to then set the downrigger in the ideal temp zone. Well, surface was 69, 40' was 64, and 60' was 58 degrees. The marks in the 50' to 60' water didn't bite on anything. Changed dodger colors, terminal tackle, corn and maggots scents many times - no bites. Changed depths, trolling speed and direction - same results. Now I know why some of the boys in North Dakota were using "Dupont Spinners" (quarter stick of dynamite taped to a rock) in Garrison Reservoir. Yes, there were guys "fishing" that way back when I lived there!
According to all the Kokanee experts' articles, I am doing everything right, but someone forgot to tell the fish! By 1100, there were only a handfull of boats and I went home after a cruise of American Lake with my one skinny koke.
There is always tomorrow.
PS: I was in Winco and bought Green Giant Steam Crisp shoepeg. Haven't seen it before, and the lable says it is steam cooked in the can. I got about a tablespoon of water left in the bottom of the can after carefully spooning the corn out. Figured it was already drained in the can so why dump it out into a sieve? It feels firmer and holds the hooks well. Is this a "new" corn?
