Went to Tapps this morning. I knew they were calling for wind, but I hoped for the best. When I got to the boat launch at 6:30, there were two foot waves coming into the launch, and the lake was white capping. I didn't want to go out, but I had paid my launching fee and was there. Just launching and getting in the boat was an experience. Anyway, made it across the lake to the only cove partially protected from the wind. Fished shallow for about two hours without a bite. Went out to 18 to 20 feet and started dragging a football head with a twin tailed grub. Within 5 minutes caught my first. Wish I could say I set the world on fire, but I stayed in that cove all day and caught 8 smallies...Nothing big. Not a fun day at the office.

Considering the weather conditions,8 smallies is pretty good. I was up there the other day and the lake looked like a warzone. Nice job out there and thanks for the report.

Last time I fished that lake I couldn't believe how many people were on it. Must be a prolific producer considering how hard it gets hammered.
Way to stick with a tough challenge! Can't pay a launch fee for nothing!

Thanks for the come-backs. Lake Tapps is a great smallmouth fishery, and does draw a lot of anglers. But the lake is so big, and there are so many places to fish, that that has never been a problem for me. What is a problem for fishermen is the recreational boating traffic during the warm summer months. But if you get on the lake early and are off the lake by noon or so, it isn't so bad. And usually the smallmouth bite has slowed considerabley by then anyway. I was just introduced to Tapps last August when a very gracious member of this site offered to take me, a total stranger, fishing with him there. Wayne, I know I've said it many times but I'll say it again. Thank you. When I said in my report being disappointed with 8 smallies, I'm alittle spoiled. That lake can put out 20, 30, sometimes more fish in a morning's outing. Granted, a lot of the smallies average a pound or less, but you're never lacking for action. And an occasional 2 to 4 lber keeps it interesting.
