I state I was targeting rock bass, but I was actually targeting anything that would bite, which I assumed would be bluegill. I wanted to wet a line in the nice weather, so I headed down to Black Lake around 8. I had always wanted to try the couple of shore access holes right by the swimming area, so I did. I tipped a small red jig with a wax worm and began to cast and slowly jig it back. After 45 minutes nothing, but a serene mind.

Then the bite turned on the 20 minutes going into dusk. I caught and released eight rock bass and one very small cutthroat trout. The first rock bass was my all time biggest (not like I've caught a lot of them though!). Personal records for me automatically get a 4-star. The seven following rock bass edged it to a 5. The amount of fight varried greatly from rock bass to rock bass, and didn't always corrolate with their size. I had one that fought like a stick and a couple that went completely berzerk, bull bluegill-style!

Picture 1: Typical rock bass.
Picture 2: Personal best rock bass (let's hear it for self-photos!).

They are very fun to catch, especially on ultra light gear.
