Finally got a chance to fish the Lake Stevens Kokanee derby. Due to the wife having to work during the past 2 I didnt think it would be fun trolling threw many boats with a little one getting into everything. So I was very excited to give it a go this year no matter the outcome. A special thanks to Rseas for the great blog post and kokanee information.
Plans didnt go as planned didnt get off work until 7pm home by 8 to bed by 10 up at 1:15am after hitting snooze. Moving slow thinking of my pillow got the boat in the water by 245am. Motored out away from the docks very slow to the lake middle ish as for some of our fellow fisherman didnt have lights on there boat. Some glows sticks from the dollar store or some sort of white light would have worked. Shut the motor down and planed the attack of what to start using.
Trolled with shoe peg corn and a bunch of scents to try and see what would work. Used many different colored 4/0 flasher/dodgers from dick nite to other brands and swing blades with some sort of UV. Tried a few wedding ring type spinners store bought but mainly used home made fly type and spinner type lures. With 2 rods on down riggers and one flat line. My fishing partner thinking the 2 pole tag wasnt a bad idea after all.
My friend I was fishing with got the first fish in the boat at around first light with some nice size to it. weighing in at .99 something he didnt remember. I got my first fish in a while later that was a nice size just smaller than the first. Sent gear back down for some time then started changing colors of rigs flashers and scents even leader lengths. I got one more fish in the boat that was smaller but feisty. Trolling from the south side of the lake to the north on the east side of the aerator I pulled my gear in to see it was tangled so after fixing up and re corning and scenting I chased a meter mark and hoped for the best. Sat down and the line popped off the clip got up to crank up the down rigger and realized my rod was dancing. Reeled in the final kok of the day. Fished for koks until 1030 and switch modes to hunt trout with now avail and headed in at 1pm.
Fish in at 129 at 18th place with 1.14 14.5 inches and got a nice reel for a prize didnt seem as big a turnout as in the past. Rated a 5 for it was such a beautiful day and had lots of fun. Boat out of water by 5pm home and cleaned up by 730. Took a nap until 915 off by 950 to pick up wife and kids from the airport at 1115pm home by 1am.
