Lake Chelan gave us a run for our money on Mothers Day Sunday! We started fishing on Minneapolis beach at about 8:00 in the morning. I was surprised to find a slow bite and several light striking fish. We worked our way up the beach, across the head of the Trench, and were half way up Mack bar before we boated our first fish.. which was was a TRIPLE! That was kind of the story of our day.. we would go quite a while without any action and then suddenly they would light up! We still managed to boat 7 fish with a few good quality lakers thrown in the mix! The bait that produced the most fish for us today was the big Macks Lure 6" nuclear glow squid accompanied by a smile blade. We varied our speed between 1.2 and 1.5 mph trying to get those lazy lakers to turn on. Big thanks to Dee and her son Brandon for fishing with me on this tough, but beautiful Mothers Day!

Any advise on how to cook/prepare these lunkers to eat?

It depends on the lunker! When lake trout are primarily feeding on fish their meat takes on a white color. Those are the kind of fish that taste the best in the smoker.. and smoked lake trout are awesome! However, when they are feeding primarily on the mysis shrimp that are in the lake their meat takes on a beautiful reddish pink color. Those fish eat great on the bbq, in the oven, or however you like to cook your fish. I ususlly just like to season them up with a little johnny seasoning salt, union powder, and garlic powder. Wrap the fillet in tin foil and throw em' in the over for about 25 mins (depending on size of fish) at 350 degrees. That's a quick, easy, and delicious way to do it! The possibilities are endless. Make sure you trim ALL the fat off the fillet before your cook it.. the fat can give it a funky flavor. Good luck!
