I got on the water at 5:00 pm. The weather was perfect , 74 degrees, slight variable breeze and partly cloudy. The surface water temperature was 72 degrees, with a moderate algae bloom. The insect activity was light with only a few midges on the water surface. A few dragon flies were cruising over the water.
I started with my fast sink fly line using a wine colored wooly leech which proved to be productive immediately. The fish were showing up on the finder at about 9-18 ft. I caught 3 on the wine leech and then switched to a dark green wooly leech and that also produced fish. In the 2 1/2 hours I fished I landed 6 rainbows between 16-17" and lost about 3 while bringing them in. The fish were very healthy and fought well. When released they swam away quickly.
After sunset several fish were hitting the surface, taking very small midges. The fall cranefly hatch should start in a few weeks, which will produce a lot of evening activity.
