It was a great winter day out on Chelan. A little warm front pushed the daytime temps well up into the 40's. We had a little epidemic of "pull-offs" at the beginning, but we ended strong with a nice pile of fish and a nice big fish. Thanks to Mike Sprague and his daughters for sharing their special time. We caught fish from 118 to 240 feet deep, but the heart of it was the 220's. Speeds of 1.3 to 1.5 worked best. Everything that we used got bit. I'd say the Worden Lures Purple Glow Flatfish in both T4 and U20 got hit a bit more. Mack's Lures Cha Cha Squidder produced well. Silver Horde's Ace Hi Fly also caught some fish. Mild temperatures and virtually no wind was a great bonus today. Also, talking with Mike about our old Army days was a real highlight. It turns out we served in the same unit.

Are you still able to legally tip your lures with pike minnow? Was curious.

I don't know of any change that would make it illegal.

I vaguely recall last year another guide and member discussing the subject. That conversation determined it might very well be illegal. And the following reports stopped indicating pike minnow as the Baitt and "other" was filled in that space. Much like your report. Some time later, again vaguely remembering. A conversion asking the very question to Stacey Kelsey a WDFW employee working in region 5. Determined pike minnow to be okay to use. Since pike minnow was listed as a game fish.

Anyway, my curiosity is driven by the "Bait" used is listed as (other) instead of normally seeing Pike minnow listed there.

Hi: I had a discussion with a WDFW enforcement guy to ask questions about use of game fish as bait. I thought I remembered a general prohibition. There is no rule prohibiting using pieces of dead gamefish as bait. Of course, there is the general prohibition against the use of any kind of live fish for bait. The one way that I've heard of enforcement issues regarding the use of game fish as bait is having more than a limit of gamefish on board for bait. The example I recollect was a halibut fisherman using rainbow trout on board for bait, but had more than 5 trout per angler in the cooler. In the Washington Lakes report format, there is no selection for Northern Pikeminnow so for Washington Lakes report purposes the bait is "Other". As a practical matter we will tip a chunk of stuff on our Cha Cha Squidders and Ace Hi Flies. We pretty much use what we think will work best. The great thing about Northern Pikeminnow (aside from lakers liking their flavor) is their skin is tough as shoe leather so it really stays on well. Well, on to 2012
