Went out to Desire today with some brand new Rapala type lures with hopes of landing my first ever Bass. It was about 2:00 and I had the dock all to myself wich is good as I was hoping to get some casting in. After about 40 cast's and 4 different lures with all kinds of different types of reeling, slashing, jerking movements... Nada. So decided to go to my ol' faithful and put out a 3 or 4 foot bottom fishing gear on. Loaded up a small hook with bright green powerbait ball and casted out. Sat down on the dock and waited. 'Bout 15 minutes later there was a large splash way out there. I was looking at it going "man, I wish that is where I should have casted". It jumped again and I saw the nice purple color of it's side, then I noticed my pole was dancin all over the place and I got all excited! Reeled her in and landed my largest Trout to date (only been fishing for 1.5 years). It was a very nice and fat 16-18" rainbow and I was happy.
I got home and fryed it up and was dismayed at the color of the meat. I need some help here on this one. I am used to my little 10" bows to be grey or whitish in color onced cooked up but this one had a distinctive pink or orange color similar to a salmon. My wife and I didn't know any better so we decided not to eat it for fear of getting sick? What happened? is this normal?
All in all it was a great day!

Nice fish! Trout that have been in a lake or river a while tend to get pink or orange meat, similar to a salmon. There are many debates as to why some trout have this and others don't, but it seems to be a combination of diet and water. I always found the pink/orange meat trout were better eating, hopefully you put it in the fridge for leftovers.

The trout out of Desire all have pink/orange meat. I believe it comes from their diet. They taste much better than trout with white meat, be it in the smoker or the frying pan. You didn't throw it out, did ya!? Nice looking fish!

Nice fish. At least you got a nice picture of her. I agree with the others the red or pinkish meet is usually the diet. But hey better safe than sorry.
