Aaron and I got to the Potholes in the late afternoon and took his boat out for a few hours of trolling for rainbows. We were running four rods and using a variety of set ups. We fished across from the dam on the east side of the lake. Saw tons of fish on the fishfinder and I quickly stuck a fish that came undone, but that was it.
We agreed on two issues that hampered our success - no downriggers, and we were unable to get Aaron's trolling motor to go below 1.9 mph. It felt like a fast troll to me. I'd like to get out there again and try for rainbows as potholes has some real hogs, but next time we'll be a little more prepared. Still, as always nice to be on the water and we had a beautiful sunset. Plus, Aaron's boat is way cool.
The next morning we went back out and did some dropshoting for smallmouth. They were in thick and we caught several in 20-30 ft deep water with small green worm plastics.
NOTE: pictures are from the next morning when we went out and targeted smallmouth bass off the south side by the dam.
